Grout Cleaner

First off, let me just say … please don’t judge! The floor in my bathroom had gotten pretty grimy. Scrubbing floors was never high on my list of favorite chores to begin with, and then with being pregnant and taking care of a newborn, it just never happened. Well, sometime last week it hit me that I just couldn’t stand it anymore, so I headed over to Pinterest (always a good way to start :-)) to check out recipes for baby-safe DIY grout cleaners. I was skeptical about some of the pictures I saw, but decided to try one for which I actually had all the ingredients (thank you, Unique, Just Like Everyone Else, for this gem).

I mixed up a half batch of this stuff in a spray bottle and went to work coating the whole floor with it. I let it sit for an hour and then went back in with my scrub brush, and WOW! Simultaneously awesome and completely disgusting. I don’t even want to think about the possibility that my baby had touched that floor before it was clean, but it sure looks good now!

Grout Cleaning

Recipe:

  • 7 cups water
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/3 cup lemon juice (or ammonia, if you have it)
  • 1/4 cup vinegar

Directions:

  1. Mix ingredients in a measuring cup in the sink (baking soda + vinegar = fizziness, so I recommend mixing somewhere safe)
  2. Pour mixture into spray bottle
  3. Spray generously on grout and let sit for 1 hour
  4. Scrub vigorously with scrub brush
  5. Wipe up all the yucky liquid with sponge or rag
  6. Mop the floor to get it nice and shiny!
