Thanksgiving!
Yesterday we celebrated our first Thanksgiving as a married couple! We are so thankful to finally be together, and to have a cozy home and a kitchen to cook delicious things! We were thrilled that our friend Nathan was able to join us for Thanksgiving dinner and an afternoon of Scattergories. He and Jon both love to take pictures, so this post will be a photo journal of our feast.
Jon and I planned a slightly ambitious menu, considering there were only three of us, but we had fun cooking together!
First step, brining the turkey. We found a wonderful brining recipe online (here) and soaked our turkey overnight in a savory solution of salt, sugar, cider vinegar, parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. We joked that we should call it our “Scarborough Turkey” in honor of the Simon and Garfunkel song ;-).
Thursday morning we had to take a couple pictures with the turkey before we cooked it. It was slimy and gross…
Next it got filled with stuffing and rubbed all over with buffer…
Once the turkey was in the oven we worked on other dishes… dinner rolls, fruit salad, cranberry sauce, and deviled eggs (which we ate before we could take any pictures).
And of course a Thanksgiving meal would not be complete without more stuffing, mashed potatoes, and sweet potato casserole!
I accidentally doubled the amount of butter in the sweet potato casserole … it was delicious!
We had to take a couple of breaks during the cooking … standing in the kitchen all morning was tiring!
By 2:30 our turkey was finally finished! Jon did the honors of unstuffing and carving it.
We heated up a delicious mulled cider that Nathan brought.
And then we were finally ready to eat! What a yummy meal!
We were thankful to have such a nice meal and a friend to share it with!
